This year I finally made time to design the pockets for a quilted advent calendar. I had the fabric printed at Spoonflower.
Construction was very easy. To make one, you need to:
Cut the pockets out, including the solid coloured portion that will become the pocket lining:
Iron the the folds at the top of the pocket front:
Iron the folds at the bottom of the pocket. You will see that a bit of the pocket lining extends above the pocket front, to provide contrast/interest:
Cut 28 strips of cotton fabric that are 4.5″ x 2.5″, and sew one to the bottom of each pocket, through all 3 layers:
Lay out all your pockets, and decide on the final order. Take each column and sew the pockets together.
Cut 5 strips of cotton fabric that are 2.5″ x 38″, and sew these between the columns, and at each side.
Finish as desired. I used warm & natural batting, and cotton fabric for backing. I free motion quilted between the pockets, and bound the quilt with a lovely blue:
